The next year, the White House unveiled a slick new site, moving to a more expansive, centered layout.

By 2006 the administration was experimenting with a whole host of different multimedia, including interactive maps and the famous "Barney Cam."

The Bush administration introduced a much cleaner, more modern looking site in mid-2001. In the days after Sept. 11, the site became an important information tool for the government to get out information about the attack.

George W. Bush's first webpage was an improvement on the Clinton-era page, adding a lot more visuals and eventually adding multimedia.

In terms of design, the website took a huge step backwards in 2000, but made a giant leap forward when it came toPR. The White House dropped graphics from the page, but started providing daily updates touting the administration's accomplishments.

In 1998 the White House added the dreaded animated gif to their page. The site also began to morph into a resource where citizens could learn more about their government, access government services and get information on things like White House tours.

In 1997 the White House added images to text. However, the site offered little more than the most basic information.

The White House's first webpages were extremely rudimentary, offering little more than the chance to sift through whatever mixed bag of content the White House had uploaded.
